Is There Such a Place As HELL?

Different people have different ideas about what happens to a person who dies. Some believe that when we die nothing remains of our being or personality. Others believe that all who die go to heaven, regardless of what kind of life they have lived. Still others who are religious believe that there is a "holding place" where sinful souls can prepare to eventually be allowed into heaven. The problem with all of this is that it has no foundation in Scripture. Hebrews 9:27 says: "it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."

According to God's Word, those who die in a right relationship with God will be welcomed into heaven and will spend an eternity in His wonderful presence. All others "shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power" (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

The most common word found in Scripture for this terrible place is "hell." Fol-lowing are four things we learn about this place called "hell."

Hell Is An Actual Place

Hell is not simply a fictional place invented by churches to scare people. In fact, the Bible tells us more about hell than it does about heaven. As far as the Bible is concerned, there can be no doubt as to its reality. For example, it speaks of people being damned to hell (Matthew 23:33) and being "cast into hell" (Matthew 5:29)

Hell Is A Fearful Place

The Bible describes hell as a "place of torment" (Luke 16:28), a "furnace of fire" (Matthew 13:42), a place of "devouring fire" and "everlasting burning" (Isaiah 33:14). It is a horrible place of suffering "where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth"; (Matthew 13:42; Matthew 22:13) and where it is said God burns up "the chaff with un-quenchable fire" (Matthew 3:12).

The apostle John describes the scene in this way, "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name" (Revelation 14:11).

The above thoughts are horrifying, but they are also true. Those who find them-selves in hell will be cut off from everything that is good. They will be cursed by God and banished from even the smallest comfort or help that comes from His presence.

Being Sent To Hell Is Final

According to God's Word, any road that leads to hell is a one-way street. Once a person is there, there can be no exit.
