Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus

"Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, The next the victor’s song: To him that overcometh, a crown of life shall be; He with the King of glory Shall live eternally."

How pertinent are the lyrics of this old hymn to the on-going battle in which all of God’s family should be engaged. A favorite song from our childhood, perhaps near forty years ago we did not see the struggle which faces every individual who determines to live for the King of Kings!

We are urged not to sit down but rather to "stand up." Take an upright and firm position for not just any cause but "stand up for Jesus"–"the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). While the songwriter suggests "The strife will not be long," nonetheless he reminds us there WILL be strife–conflict and struggle. After all there’s a war going on! The forces of good and evil, righteousness and unrighteousness, holy and unholy, truth and error are squared off in a clash over high stakes–the souls of you and me–yea, the souls of our loved ones!

"This day the noise of battle." (1 Tim. 1:18). Without fear of controversy, we must unsheath "the sword of the Spirit" and use it to free lost humanity from the strangling cords of sin. We should remember that the church is a child of controversy and that it was born and nurtured in controversy. Yes, there will be opposition but let us labor to "speak the truth in love" (Eph. 4:15) and refuse to be intimidated by those who believe strong discussion of the scriptures (battle noises) are beneath the dignity of worthy religionists. Truth does exist and we must fight to uphold it! Why? "This day the noise of battle," but gratefully, "The next the victor’s song." A sweet time it shall be when we lay down our armour having "fought a good fight"!

"To him that overcometh, a crown of life shall be." The apostle Paul penned that "we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us" (Rom. 8:37). We CAN overcome! Do not give up the fight. There is too much to gain to lose. There are loved ones waiting. Take your turn on the front line. There is sweet and lasting peace we are reminded beyond the noise of the spiritual fray (Rev. 2:10).

"He with the king of glory shall live eternally." What more can be added to such words except the support of such a statement from the Holy Writ–"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in His throne" (Rev. 3:21).

There is a battle to fight, a victory to win–therefore let us "endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (2 Tim. 2:3). "Stand Up for Jesus!" –Tim Watts
