Our Sense of Awe

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear" the Hebrew writer advises (12:28). The church cannot be moved. It will not be eradicated from this world, but it can only be safe in our own community if it has the strength and contributions of its members. To protect the church, here is a general exhortation to live reverently and religiously in happy subjection of so mighty a King, who, in his great heart blesses his own most mightily. Serving is the sum of the Christian life. But we must also serve Him acceptably. God has promised to most severely requite the rebellious. This contributes to our fear of Him. Not only do we fear that we might offend Him, we also fear Divine retribution. Our fear of Him in the sense of awe and respect is born of love, loving Him with all our heart, our soul, our mind, our strength.
