Christ’s Glorious Church

by Bob Johnson

I just want to simply extol the greatnessof the church and try to cause you to understand how glorious it is, how important it is! And it must exist my friends, in your own locality, where precious souls can be continuously brought into it, and our boys and girls keep it that way through their generations; to their children and grandchildren, and right on down the line. That’s the only way it can work.

Well, this glorious institution, this wonderful institution which Jesus died for and which he has made so glorious I think in this world–glorious whenever we stop to consider it and see what it is worth and how it is to operate. It is more important than anything else that you can imagine.

First of all, I want you to realize it’s through the church that His Will will be made manifest. Have you ever thought that if it were not for the congregation where you worship, the Word of God wouldn’t be spread through your community and through regions about? Would it?

Well, there might be someone now and then say something about the Lord or about the things in the Bible. But would the Word be spread? The Bible shows me here that it is to be manifest by the church. Alright, Ephesians 3:10-11 shows that it’s by the church the manifold wisdom of God is to be made known. And not only that, it declares that it is the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. It’s God’s plan! It’s His way. The church spreads the gospel that brings the good news to people and brings them to the salvation of their souls and leads them to follow in righteousness. That’s the duty of the church that I’m talking about tonight that needs to be kept.

Oh, the church is the supplier of life! It’s the supplier of light unto the world, but, in a way, it is that which is a redemption of those who would hear and obey. It brings about victory to people over their sin and over their captivity of the devil! The church is that which must bring forth the manifold wisdom of God.

Ah, but you say, the way of redemption is given in God’s Word, and that’s true. I understand that, but where did you hear these things, my friend. Stop and think with me tonight, where did you hear the gospel? Where do you hear the things that build you up in service to God? Is it not mainly in an assembly of the body of Christ in the church that you have been taught, that you have learned, that you have developed, that you even obeyed the gospel? Was it not a faithful Christian preacher or teacher that taught you in the assembly of the church? It was the way I learned. I remember old brother Gay, brother Robertson, brother Fred Kirbo, brother Buffington back in my early days. They taught me these things. I learned them in the assembly of the church!

Ah, my mother and dad sought to teach me some, but that which really caused me to develop and grow was in the assembly of the church. Earthen vessels proclaimed the things that were needed to cause people to believe and have faith in God and His blessed Son. They told how he shed his blood for this wonderful institution–this glorious body which we’re calling the church. The faith that would shield them from all the fiery darts of satan, help them to prevail in a troubled and seemingly hopeless world. They were taught these things, their faith was built up in the church.

They taught you how to repent. How to turn away from your sins. How to dedicate your body as living sacrifices to God. Didn’t they? Do you remember these things that preachers presented to you and caused you to develop, to change your evil lifestyle, to change your outlook on life, to change your attitude to the ways of charity, of care for

others, for thankfulness and good works and to build within you some determination to serve God above all other things? Was it not in the church that you learned these things?

And did they teach you that wonderful confession that you confessed when you obeyed the gospel? That you had to believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. That’s the one you can read about over there in Acts 8:37. And you made that confession because you were taught that in the assembly. And as Paul declared in Romans 10:9-10, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Did you hear that verse? Remember that. Then Jesus said, "If you confess me before men, I’ll confess you before my Father in heaven." You were taught these things my friend, in the assembly of the church. And I must think, if you had not been taught them in an assembly of the body of Christ, you might never have known.

Who taught you to be baptized for the remission of your sins…that you would be added to the Lord’s church? Did they tell you that Jesus said, "Except you be born of the water and of the spirit you cannot enter into the kingdom of God?" You can’t be in his church? Well, he declared, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." You’ve heard it. Didn’t they tell you that when Simon Peter preached the first gospel sermon to that vast throng of the very nations that had gathered over there in Jerusalem–that he commanded them to "repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins" (Acts 2:38). And they told you what it said about three verses down didn’t they, how he relates how that they gladly received the word, and how they were baptized? And then on down in the 47th verse how that the Lord "added to the church daily such as should be saved."

My friend, you have known these things because you attended the assembly of the church and were taught. Now think with me for a minute. If you had not attended the services of the church somewhere, and been there to receive the words such as I’m talking about right here, would you have ever known them? Would you have taken your Bible and just figured out all these things by yourself? Would you have come to the conclusions that you now have come to and understanding that you now have about what God expects of you, if it had been left up to you just to try search through here and hunt out everything?

I can answer that question for you. How much do you study this good Book right now? Do you apply yourself that much right now? Would you when you were in your sins, away from God, would you have wanted to know what was here? No, you attended an assembly of the body of Christ and you were taught–just like God intended it to be. He planned it that way! He made it that way friends. 1 Corinthians 1:21, Paul tells us, "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God," look at that, "it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." Well it’s true, isn’t it? God’s plan was just like that! By the foolishness of preaching, by the gospel being taught in the as-sembly of the church the manifold wisdom of God was brought to you. Absolutely!
