Number One

by G. Steve Watts

The number one is an important part of our lives today, a number most are well aware of. Our study today takes on a journey to consider the importance of it.

Primary Number

The number one is a primary number. It holds the distinction of being (1) first in importance, and (2) first in position. Consider these ramifications: it shares its position with none other, stands all alone by itself; it is not divisible by another whole number, and it is the beginning of the numerical system. All numerical systems of the world have a corresponding number.

Man’s Interest In It

Mankind has a great interest in the number one. Most want to be number one. To hold the distinction of being number one, many will walk, run, lift weights, take pills, swim, do sit-ups, pull-ups, etc. looking to gain the number one position. This position is highly sought after by many in the world. This position has taken a poor person, after a great feat has been accomplished, and made them very important, popular, and even rich. People in the number one position have their names on the front pages of many publications, on radio, TV and other media. To many it is an honor to be number one.

Spiritual Application

God’s Word also recognizes the great importance of this number. It best describes many of the truths about a number of spiritual items of God and His system of salvation. Let us consider a few ways that it is used.

One God–Eph.4:6: "One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." By applying the definitions of the two words together, we have only supreme deity. Our God and Holy Father is number one. He shares his position with none other, stands alone as our Father, is first in position, first in importance, and is the beginning God. The choice of another god would be a bad one since the new god could not do what the true God can and does do. The one God is over all others.

One Lord–Eph.4:5: "There is…one Lord." These two words are defined: only Master, supreme authority. This is often applied to Christ. His Father, Matt.28:18, gave him all power in heaven and earth. As Master, he shares his position with none other, stands alone as Head of his Church, is first in position, first in importance, and is the beginning Head and Master of the Church. His word is first, foremost, and final! He alone wrote a will with the conditions to be met by those that would be inheritors.

One Body–Eph.4:4: "There is one body." These two words are defined: only body. This body is number one. It shares that position with none other.

It is the beginning body. It is first in position, and in importance. This body is the Church that belongs to Christ. Eph.1:23, God "gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body." This church is the number one church and is first. It shares that position with no other church. This is Christ’s only bride and is married to only number one. Eph.5:22-30.

One Faith–Eph.4:5: "There is…one faith." These two words are defined: only belief, persuasion, constancy, only system of religious truth. This faith stands alone. It shares the position with none other. It is the beginning faith and is number one. Jude verse 3: "ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."

One Spirit–Eph.4:4: "There is…one Spirit." These two words are defined: only Holy Spirit. This Holy Spirit shares his position with none other, number one. He is first in importance and is before all others. This Spirit guided the writers of New Testament into all truth (Jn.14-16). This produced the one faith.

One Baptism–Eph.4:5: "There is… one baptism." These two words are defined: one or first baptism, immersion, plunging under. First in importance and position. It stands alone. It shares that position with none other. It is the beginning (gospel baptism) and shares that with nothing else. 1Cor.12:13: "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." This baptism puts us into Christ (Gal.3:27), and is the number one baptism in the world.

One Hope–Eph.4:4: "Ye are called in one hope of your calling." These two words are defined: one or first expectation, anticipation, or confidence. The hope of a Christian is one-salvation. It stands alone. It shares that position with none other. It is the beginning of all hopes. It is first. It is number one!

Paul commands us to (Eph.3:3): "Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." Unity is defined oneness, thus the command is to worship the number one God, thru Christ the number one Lord, guided by the Word inspired by the number one Spirit, as taught in the number one faith, which teaches us to be baptized with the number one baptism, that puts us into the number one body, that gives us the number one hope. Do you have the Number One?
